Seeking an experienced General Manager to take full accountability for the operational performance, profitability, safety and legal compliance of a quarry operation.
This is a senior, site-based leadership role overseeing quarry production, mining activities, maintenance, health and safety, environmental compliance, quality, logistics, financial performance and staff management.
The successful candidate must be able to lead the operation from the front, achieve production and cost targets, reduce downtime and ensure that all employees, contractors, machinery and site activities comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and relevant environmental requirements.
Minimum Requirements:
Minimum 5 years' quarry or related mining, aggregate or stone-production experience; a relevant qualification, blasting certificate or dimension-stone exposure will be advantageous.
Proven experience managing quarry production, maintenance activities, operational costs and multidisciplinary teams.
Practical understanding of extraction, drilling and blasting where applicable, crushing, screening, stockpiling, loading and dispatch operations.
Strong working knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable environmental requirements.
Experience managing budgets, production costs, fuel usage, labour costs, contractors, repairs and maintenance expenditure.
Strong understanding of heavy machinery and quarry equipment, including excavators, loaders, dump trucks, crushers and screens.
Able to manage supervisors, machine operators, drivers, maintenance teams, general workers, contractors and administrative staff.
Strong leadership, planning, decision-making, problem-solving and conflict-management abilities.
Prepared to work at the quarry site in dusty, noisy and outdoor conditions, including overtime or weekends where operationally required.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Take full responsibility for the day-to-day management, operational performance and profitability of the quarry.
Develop and implement operational plans, production schedules and resource requirements to achieve customer, production and financial targets.
Oversee extraction, drilling and blasting where applicable, crushing, screening, stockpile management, quality control, loading and dispatch operations.
Monitor production output, wastage, downtime, equipment utilisation and labour productivity, and implement corrective action where required.
Plan future extraction areas and quarry development to support safe and sustainable production.
Ensure full compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, environmental permits, legal appointments and company policies.
Promote a zero-harm culture through risk assessments, safe operating procedures, toolbox talks, inspections, incident investigations, training and contractor compliance.
Ensure machinery is legally compliant, properly inspected and operated safely, and stop unsafe work or equipment where necessary.
Manage environmental controls covering dust, noise, water, waste and land rehabilitation, while maintaining constructive relationships with surrounding communities and stakeholders.
Lead the quarry workforce, manage staffing and competence requirements, conduct performance reviews and address absenteeism, productivity, discipline and workplace conflict.
Manage operations within approved budgets, monitor monthly financial performance, identify cost-saving opportunities and approve expenditure within delegated authority limits.
Oversee preventative maintenance, breakdown response, machinery inspections, external contractors and initiatives to reduce equipment downtime.
Ensure extracted and processed materials meet customer specifications, investigate quality complaints and implement corrective action.
Oversee stock control, loading, dispatch and delivery schedules, and coordinate supply requirements with sales teams, transport providers and customers.
Prepare accurate production, safety, cost, maintenance, equipment, stock and staff-performance reports for the Managing Director and Directors.
